After 80-100 pages you will no longer need to use it. However, I felt compelled to do a review as I believe it to be one of the best books I have ever read. In my opinion, you know it is a good book when you find yourself actually yelling out loud at times. instead, it creates compelling characters with detailed backgrounds that are given their own chapters to tell their story.
A plot that will keep you guessing and wanting more. You will have to use the appendix in the back of the book to get all of the houses and characters sorted out. Once you do, however, you will realize that there are a "core" group of characters whose names come up again and again and the story revolves around them. After over 1,500 reviews, I cannot say much more than what has already been said about this novel. If you even remotely enjoy fantasy novels, this book is definitely for you. It also contains other elements that blend in so smoothly you won't even realize you are also reading a story of romance, history, coming-of-age, sorrow, and mystery.
I cannot say that any other book has provoked that reaction from me (and I have read hundreds if not thousands) There were two scenes specifically that brought that about, but won't spoil it for any potential readers out there. So overall, a powerful novel that weaves a tale unlike any other.
You won't regret the purchase. A Game of Thrones does not rely on elves, halflings, orcs, or goblins- in fact you will not find any of those common fantasy creatures here.
Although it is over 800 pages, it flies by because the characters propel the plot forward full speed. (Mind you the book is over 800 pages long).
This book weaves a tale that is epic fantasy to rival that of even Tolkkien. Once you get past all of the names, houses, and locations, you will find yourself immersed in a world that is a true delight to discover.
Happy reading.
I agree that the book is rich and very well written. I read this book with much anticipation because I read and heard so many great reviews. Very disappointed. However, there is not a single likable character in the book. It's just not fun to read when you don't care about any of the characters.
I bought this book based on all the positive reviews. I am so glad that I did. Every free moment I have was dedicated to this book and it was so hard to put down. I can't wait to read the next one.
This is a great book for people who are looking to start a 'mid-evil esk' series. The character development keeps you wanting to read on to the next book.
I presume you know what genre I'm talking about. Each chapter tells the story from one character's point of view. You can't assume that your favorite character is going to make all the way to the end. While certain other authors have gorged themselves on too much magic, in this series the magic is very downplayed. The author is especially fond of children, most of the main characters are either children or teenagers. But beware that you're getting into a really huge story which never ends. I've gotten though the first three books, and while the third book does finally wrap up SOME of the storylines, more is left hanging.A unique element of this story is that some of the main characters die, which keeps you on your toes. In fact, halfway into the first book you may be wondering if there's any magic in this world at all. But when magic finally happens, it's long absence makes the event a lot more magical. So while this book still capitalizes on the fantasy genre which is all derivative of Tolkien, this book is very different than the simple good guy defeats the great Evil story.
